Negative taken for February 23, 1964, Arkansas Gazette article "Farriers Follow an Ancient Craft," E5:2. W.A. Watts, a farrier or horseshoer, shapes a horseshoe on his anvil at Oaklawn Jockey Club in Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas. He uses both steel and aluminum racing shoes in his work. Each horse's hoof requires a hand-fitted shoe in order hold up under the pounding of a horse race. Watts, who is from Archer City, Archer County, Texas, is one of eleven horseshoers working at Oaklawn this racing seasons.
